About the Line up:
SEE MORE PERSPECTIVE has been described as a “Chicago Institution”, “Walking creativity” and “The hardest working, most unjustly slept on artist in the Twin Cities”...This award winning hip hopper is a Twin Cities Native, Chicago transplant, MC, Poet, Producer, Engineer, Educator, Visual Artist, Actor, Thinker, Lover and one hell of a cook. He also received a 2013 VERVE Grant from Intermedia Arts, was a semi-finalist of the Saint Paul Challenge for the Million dollar idea to make Saint Paul Great. SEE MORE is currently on the TruArtSpeaks and COMPAS Arts MN artist rosters teaching rap, spoken word, hip hop music production, and social justice. He has most recently joined the board of the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, where he is excited to continue to find new ways to connect with and contribute to Minnesota’s art and music scenes.
Chava Gabrielle is a literary & performance artist, emphasizing in Theatre & Poetry. she is 19 & lives in the Twin Cities of Minnesota. she indulges in the idea of equity & justice especially for women of color. with a life emphasis on caffeinated beverages, community, & other people’s winter sweaters, she hopes to bring all injustice to light one cup of coffee, one poem, & one conversation at a time.
Guante is a hip hop artist, two-time National Poetry Slam champion, activist, educator and writer. He and/or his work has appeared on Upworthy, MSNBC, Racialicious, Feministing, MPR, Everyday Feminism, Night Vale Radio, the Progressive, City Pages’ “Artists of the Year” list and URB Magazine’s “Next 1000” list, and he has performed everywhere from the United Nations to the Soundset hip hop festival to hundreds of colleges, clubs, and theaters across the country.
Kenny Ngo is a queer Vietnamese-American poet seeking degrees in Creative Writing and Women's Studies at Hamline University. He represented Hamline at CUPSI (College Union Poetry Slam Invitationals) in 2013 and 2014. Being the youngest son of immigrant parents, he first picked up a pen at age 1 and started writing by age 3. He writes about heritage, self-love, and the value of emotional honesty in self-care. In his free time, he pursues his dream of opening a bakery by baking various cheesecakes.
Moors Blackmon is Dameun Strange, voice and keytar; Kahlil Brewington, drums; and Antoine Martinneau, bass. The music, described as psychedelecrtric fazz, draws inspiration from artists and bands such as Herbie Hancock, Sun Ra, Parliament Funkadelic, and Jimi Hendrix to name a few. Moors Blackmon is an intergalactic vessel and with the crew of Strange, Brewington and Martinneau, its mission is to travel through space and time to expand the mind of every civilization it encounters with its substantial sonic battery.
Trung Lê Nguyễn aka Trungles is a Vietnamese American comic artist living and working in Minnesota. He specializes in fairy stories and fantastical narrative works, borrowing heavily from early 20th century illustrations for children’s stories and ephemera. His works include explorations of uneasy transitions in and around interpersonal and cultural spaces.
Lisa MonaLisa Berman has been dancing as a Hip Hop/Breaking artist since 2003. She is the recipient of the Jerome Foundation Travel and Study Grant for Choreography in 2008. Former member of Collective Hip Hop Dance Company, and Full Circle Productions NYC, she is currently the founder and Artistic Director of Minneapolis based dance company, In New Company (INC). Locally, she has performed at The Southern Theater, The Ordway Center, The Minneapolis Institute of Arts, The Cowles Center, Intermedia Arts, and The Walker Art Center. National performance venues include, NJPAC, Paradise Theater, Lincoln Center, Performa Biennial NYC, Art Basel Miami and the Corcoran Gallery Museum in Washington DC. Internationally, she has performed in the Netherlands at “Street Science” Hip Hop festival, The Kunsthal Museum in Rotterdam and The National History Museum of Amsterdam.
Alicia Steele is a seeker of expressive arts, finding joy in dance, visual and theater art, mainly finding a home in vocal performance - as long as it's live. Alicia loves has a love for improv, often finding outdoor or public spaces to sing/dance solo and with friends. In 2013 "Alicia Steele and the Endeavors" released a short EP "The Foreplay Sessions" a mix of live and studio jazz/RnB tunes. After taking a year off performing, Alicia is anxious for growing opportunities to perform.
Kevin Kaoz Moore aka Kaoz is a native Clevelander and an award winning writer, actor, spoken word artist and educator. He began his artistic career appearing in countless plays, community theater projects, and has played supporting roles in two independent films. As grand poetry slam champion of his city, Kaoz represented Cleveland at the National Slam competitions two years in a row.
Kaoz has also been recognized for his activism and work in GLBT communities of color. He received the Harold PhilPot Youth Leadership Award from National AIDS Education & Services for Minorities for his groundbreaking work with Young Men who have sex with men of color. Kaoz most recently has completed the BlackEsque: QueErotica Tour which travelled through the West and Southwest with stops in L.A., Phoenix, Flagstaff, Alberquerque, Denver, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco and Oakland California. He also dropped his new full length album “The End is Beginning” in June 2015.
Anaïs Deal-Márquez is a Minneapolis based interdisciplinary artist and community organizer who sees music and storytelling as key in building power with communities of color. With roots across the U.S.-Mexico border, her writing looks at identity, displacement, trauma, and healing. She is the founder of Border Voices, which uses storytelling and performance to create spaces for dialogue where local poets can share their immigrant truths. Anais is a recipient of the 2014 VERVE Grant for Spoken Word artists through Intermedia Arts and a winner of the 2015-16 Loft Mentor Series in poetry.
QueenDrea Voice-Loopsneffects: A consummate singer/song writer who’s style ranges from alternative rock to hip hop has blessed stages from the Twin Cities, to Austria. She has worked with National artists Burning Spear and The Last Poets. Queen Drea was also featured on the EP "Patriotic Duty" as a vocalist and song writer for local groundbreaking social/political/Hip Hop/Spoken Word group EduPoetic Enterbrainment. Drea is currently working with 2014 McKnight Fellow, Michelle Kinney in an Advant Garde - Experimental fusion group called "2Red", where both musicians multiply the musicality of their pieces with loops and effects. Creating an orchestral fullness with just a voice and a cello. The Queendrea Voce-Loops n Effects Experiment is an extension of 2Red where Drea's voice alone is the music and the movement. Often using the term "I''m a lover, not a fighter" Queen Drea's writing is broody and emotionally charged. A lyrical fight for love, which I guess means Queen Drea is both a lover AND a fighter...
Sankophoenix: Music, to me, is purpose. Music is transformative. Music is a process-for all spirits involved in creating it. Ultimately, music defines itself differently for different people and that is the beauty of it. A woman of my own musical style, but influenced by originals I describe my style as a neo-jazz fusion with a touch of opera. I love the elusiveness of jazz, the sincerity of neo-soul, and the challenge of opera. I am inspired by artists like Rachelle Ferrell, Erykah Badu, Nnena Freelon, Amel Larrieux, and Lizz Wright.
Hannah Lee aka Fiddlesticks is an Illinois native now living in Milwaukee. She is attempting to reemerge into the arts after leaving the live art scene in Chicago over five years ago, only painting and showing sporadically since then. Currently she primarily works in large canvas formats, which she nails to the wall of her apartment until they are finished.
Love Nocturnal is a new music fusion project out of Minneapolis, with the pulse of Americana and a spirit that spans genres. Grounded in the vocal harmonies of songwriters Renée Copeland and Kalen Rainbow Keir. It's a little dark, a little sensitive, and a lot of soul.
Hiponymous is a co-founded dance company based in Minneapolis committed to making work that values community, social justice, and queer/feminist representations. Since they started making dances in 2012, they have premiered 9 new works around the Minneapolis/St Paul area.
They make dances the way life often feels: complex with bodies that experience a world of adversity and complicity, and perhaps they make dances that reveal how they would like to choreograph our lives: full of consensuality, deep, radical friendships, humor, real equity, good food and of course, ice cream.
Morgan Willenbring, aka Ganzobean, was born and raised in Saint Paul, MN. He started DJing at 15 when he sold his drum set for turntables, and inherited his brother’s hip-hop vinyl collection. Soon after he was given his first Korg sampling sequencer. He still loves video games, graffiti, and girls; only now he’s a grown man going on 31, his record collection is surpassing 2,000 records, and he works with Ableton, Maschine, and Pro Tools.
For the last year he has been focused on solo performances, mixing live production with DJing, and studio work, he is currently recording, mixing, and producing two new projects. Be on the look at for both of them this fall/winter. When he’s not performing alone, he DJ’s for St. Paul Slim of Stophouse Music, and Musab of Rhymesayers Entertainment.
He has toured North America with such acts as Atmosphere, Musab, St. Paul Slim, DJ Abilities, Prof, Abstract Rude, Burnell Washburn, Grieves, Blueprint, Pep Love, just to name a few. Along with being a full time college student, he has hosted the Ganzobean Variety Hour Podcast on Sizzlin999.com every Thursday since 2014.
About the SEE MORE PERSPECTIVE's 'SEX TAPE':
The sex-positive hip hop album you didn’t know you were waiting for.
Like many revolutionary acts, it started with a ridiculous idea. See More’s brother, producer Nye, made a folder full of beats sampling 1970’s pornos and suggested that See More write dirty sex raps over them.
And with that, See More Perspective, best known for his upbeat, positive, politically-and-culturally-conscious classicist hip hop, knew what he had to do.
Mixing the offbeat irreverence of the original concept with his own progressive, inclusive, sex-positive philosophy, See More crafted a subversive concept album that is equal parts funky, funny and feminist, tackling serious issues and concepts like consent, safe sex, and objectification with a sharp wit, unrelenting humanity, and one of the most agile tongues in the Twin Cities hip hop scene… so to speak.
SEX TAPE also features sex educators and activists like Alicia Steele and Kaoz shedding light on the issues, blending seamlessly into the 20 minute flow of boom bap instrumentals (provided by Nye), scratches (provided by Ganzobean), and See More himself– still one of the most insightful, underrated, and unique voices in indie hip hop.
The album’s dedication is telling: “This is dedicated to my niece and everyone who finds sex in the media at a young age without any parallel education.” SEX TAPE would be a unique accomplishment even if it were nothing more than a sex-positive rap project, but it ends up being much more than the sum of its parts. This is about how art can integrate education and entertainment, how hip hop can be a space to open ourselves up and have real conversations about real issues, and how we can understand sex –and love– in ways that acknowledge and celebrate our humanity, both individually and collectively.
